I think this becomes easier as you get older because you stop caring about what people will think. I don’t mean that you stop caring about friends but you just learn to prioritise yourself and your needs and to articulate that loud and clear. Start now. Explain nicely but be assertive the next time you decline and stick to it. Don’t give in.

I think therapy is definitely the answer or rather the beginning of your journey to heal. And forgive. Please seek professional counselling because suppressing and internalising this is only going to make it super difficult for you to live in the same house. I’m always so busy with my children’s routine that suddenly I have got a few days free as one is away at hostel and the other has gone for a school camp that I’m feeling lost and don’t know what to do. Later on in life when they go away what will I do? Just thinking about all this for the past two days.
